Tell me about your look.

I like the dressiness of the ’50s and ’60s, but I also like new fashion. I work with local designers, because it’s nice to get stuff that’s tailored. Adam Arnold from Portland made me a tuxedo when Pink Martini was at the Oscars in 2008.

What’s Pink Martini?

It’s a wonderful big band, a 13-piece group that plays pop music from all through the 20th century in 20 languages. If the UN in 1963 had a house band, it would have been Pink Martini.

How tall are you?

I’m 6 foot 4 inches. People weren’t commonly that tall in the vintage era I like, so I have a lot of disappointments. I have to be persistent about finding that 45-year-old seersucker suit that fits.

What’s your dog’s name?

Henry. He comes to work with me.

What’s your fashion strategy as band manager?

When I’m at a show, I want to look like someone in charge. But in the music business you need to have a lot of personality. Vintage jackets are great, because you look like you’re trying, yet they’re easy.

How do people respond?

I have these over-the-top sunglasses with leather arms, and when I wear them with a seersucker suit and walk through the audience, it turns me into a rock star. People are, like, “Dude, that suit is so fly!”

What do you do all day?

The band has its own record label; we’ve sold over 3 million records. I oversee the label and act as manager, running the band’s business and headquarters, and booking the tours.

What should I listen to in my office as background music?

If you want to listen but not be overwhelmed, try blue-note jazz or classical. I also listen to a lot of ’70s and ’80s at work.
