Desk as Destiny

In 1819, the Senate installed mahagony desks — still used today — to replace those burned by the British in the War of 1812. Price: $34 apiece.

Around 1900, senators began inscribing their names in the drawers of their desks.

Desk XCII

Occupied by William Cowan (D-Mass.)

Gomez and Markey both want this desk.

Desk LXXXIII

Occupied by Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.)

Massachusetts’s two desks are now side by side because both senators are Democrats. If Gomez wins, desk XCII will be moved to the GOP side of the chamber.
