1 How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia by Mohsin Hamid (Riverhead), $26.95

Cleverly packaged as a self-help book, this novel charts the rise of a poor young man from a fictional Middle Eastern country who embraces his entrepreneurial zeal and becomes a bottled-water magnate amid his rapidly modernizing but still corrupt surroundings.

2 The Next Day David Bowie (Columbia Records), $13.99 on iTunes

The legend has released his first album in a decade, channeling the energetically weird Bowie of old. The first single, Where Are We Now?, is on YouTube, and is slower and more woeful than the rest of the tracks.

3 SXSW Conferences & Festivals Austin, Tex., March 8-17

The 26th annual eclectic celebration of tech, film, and music kicks off. Seek out panel discussions such as “Getting Started With Angel Investing” before catching an Alabama Shakes show. (Those unable to attend can get updates with #sxsw hashtags on Twitter.)
