Bullish Billionaires

Ronald Henkoff, EDITOR

In times of turmoil, investors run from risk, and lately that has meant an aversion to equities. Billionaire fund manager Leon Cooperman says the flight from stocks is a mistake. In our special report on equities, Cooperman, whose stock-dominated Omega Advisors Inc. hedge fund has returned an average of 13percent annually since 1991, tells Gillian Wee how he finds bargains even in a market that he describes as “very sick” (“HOW LEON COOPERMAN STAYS AHEAD,” page 24). “Stocks are the best house in the financial asset neighborhood,” he says.

Other billionaires, while not quite as sanguine as Cooperman, are bullish on individual companies and sectors (“TIPS FROM BILLIONAIRES,” page 32). Our cover package includes a Greenwich Associates survey showing that investors rank highest those equities researchers who can make money for them, even in a market driven by macro trends (“AMERICA’S BEST STOCK ANALYSTS,” page 34). We also look at the best-performing initial public offerings, a timely subject given the troubled debut of Facebook Inc. (“IPO WINNERS AND LOSERS,” page 52). And check out the profile by Anthony Effinger and Sree Vidya Bhaktavatsalam of a man who has grown rich by buying shares in other people’s stock funds (“SEAN HEALEY’S $400 BILLION FUND EMPIRE,” page 44).
