2009 Henschke ‘Tappa Pass’ Shiraz $85

With a winery that makes many outstanding wines, it’s hard to have a favourite. Looking for something special and affordable, I have to confess to loving the ‘Euphonium’ blend of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc. When I’m out to impress and money is less of an object, I opt for ‘Tappa Pass’. While 2009 was a tricky vintage in the Barossa and Eden valleys, this is a terrific red: spicy yet subtle, showing underlying power and intensity and slinky fine-grain tannins.
