Global exchange traded funds (ETFs) and exchange traded products (ETPs) have reached record highs on the back of increasing institutional investment, according to research from consultants ETFGI. The sector experienced net inflows of $73.4 billion in the first quarter of 2013, pushing total global assets to $2.09 trillion. The US dominates the ETP arena, having 70% of global ETP assets with 1440 products on offer. There are more ETPs to choose from in Europe (2138) but it has only 18% of global market share. Asia Pacific, which includes Australia, is third in terms of market share at 7% and has 558 products on offer. More than 90 are listed on the ASX. ETPs in Australia are expected to continue to grow, with new ETPs introduced regularly.
