AT A STARTING PRICE OF $845,000, THE 918 SPYDER — easily the most expensive road-appropriate Porsche ever made — boasts peak fuel economy of 78 mpg and C02 emissions as low as 70 grams per kilometer, the lowest amount of toxic gases released of any production car in the world. Yet the all-wheel drive Porsche — zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 199 mph — has already conquered the Nurbürgring racetrack, lapping the benchmark German circuit in less than 7 minutes, 30 seconds. The Spyder features four different running modes: “E-drive” uses the electric motors only for speeds lower than 16 mph, while “hybrid,” “sport” and “race” use a combination of electric and combustion engines. Push the “E-boost” button and a jolt of current shoots this convertible past slower cars — a high-tech version of a hot-rodder’s nitrous-oxide tank.

But the Spyder Hybrid is a limited masterpiece; Porsche plans to make only 918 of them.
