WITH ITS GULLWING DOORS, MERCEDES’ SLS AMG harkens back to the legendary SL of the 1950s. But this all-electric version, dubbed the E-Cell, looks mostly to the future. Below that elongated hood, the E-Cell has 12,000-rpm electric motors at each wheel, with another pair in back. Electronics send power to any of the four wheels as needed. The E-Cell has 526 horsepower and a 4.0-second blast from zero to 60 mph — which take place in surreal electric silence. Drivers can adjust settings to conserve power or boost performance. Mercedes aims to enlarge the current battery, targeting a range beyond the 125 miles of the production model that’s showroom-bound early next year.
